In Reply to Dead Letters

souls of poets dead and gone,

who passed through seacoast towns at night

and lingered where the long boats lay,

 

you shed your silver eyelids on the sea

and stared

as lights winked out along the coast.

 

fishermen slept, the nets dried,

the star, the rat, the tide,

indifferent as you drew away.
